FUNCTION & POSITION 
Communications Officer

LOCATION
Amman with travel to Mafraq, Zarqa, Irbid and East Amman

REPORTING TO 
Deputy Country Director, with strong links to Regional Communications Manager

OVERALL PURPOSE 
To generate awareness and support for Medair’s work in Jordan, with a focus on both local and international audiences. The successful candidate will be a dynamic, passionate, and creative communicator with professional experience and skills in communications, social media, fundraising, PR, media or a related field. S/he will be highly motivated, capable of managing an exciting and varied workload with minimal supervision, and able to operate in complex but fascinating contexts. The role includes extensive interaction with families supported by Medair and an international communications team.

PROJECT OVERVIEW
Medair is based in Amman and provide health and cash assistance in the governorates of Mafraq, Zarqa, Irbid and East Amman. Medair began responding to the Syrian Crisis in Jordan in 2012 responding to the needs of those affected by crisis.

Key Responsibilities- Communications
Communications and Fundraising Resources
  • Travel frequently to field projects to proactively and reactively gather resources, including photographs, case studies, interviews, and video resources for use my external donors, media outlets, Medair Global Communications Team, and affiliate offices, partners, etc.
  • Manage input of resources (photos and text documents) into the document management software and online photo database
  • Gather and prepare fundraising materials (e.g. gift handles, direct marketing resources, thank-you videos, stories) according to targets set by the GSO and the RCM
  • As needed, work closely with the RCM and international fundraising teams in affiliate offices to put together compelling private fundraising proposals and reports
  • Coordinate at a field level the necessary information  to give a ‘birds-eye view’ of the programmes for the website and the Annual Report

Media and Public Relations
  • Regularly monitor local press and events, keeping relevant leadership informed
  • Proactively liaise with local, regional, national and international media in Jordan, to form strong relationships and build Medair’s positive image locally
  • Working with the RCM, prepare, organise, and lead field visits of high profile visitors, photographers, journalists, or media crews​
  • As needed, act as media spokesperson for Medair’s interests (esp. Arabic speaking media) in the field in close coordination with the RCM
  • Develop key messages as needed
  • As needed, advise national staff regarding media and communication, providing training as necessary for interviews

Social Media
  • Facilitate and produce short content updates and creative interactive features on social media outlets such as Facebook , Twitter, and Instagram. Support Global Communications Team in maintaining relations with online social media users and fans in answering fans’ questions and comments or in communicating from a Medair field perspective.
  • Train and encourage field staff on the appropriate use of online social media. Actively monitor Arabic communications initiated by field staff (e.g. social media posts, personal websites, blogs, newsletters, etc.) and if necessary propose corrective actions to ensure strong brand reputation
Internal Communication
  • Assist RCM and field leadership team in developing tools and structures to pro-actively support the team in improving internal communication within country as well as across the region
  • Working with the RCM, report monthly to Global Communications Team for updates on major country programme events and update on communications activities and resources

Brand and co-branding Coordination
  • Assist Medair staff on institutional donor and Medair visibility conditions and requirements, developing a communications plan for each project in coordination with programme staff and the RCM
  • Promote, review and audit, under the guidance of the Brand Manager, the design and application of Medair and, where applicable, institutional donor branding in all marking, visibility and field communication.
  • Advise logistics staff on the correct design of field visibility items
  • Create field communication tools at the request of the project managers or other support staff
  • Raise awareness about appropriate branding in team trainings and meetings; ensure that Medair staff, facilities and equipment  have access to appropriate Medair branded items

General Responsibilities
  • To know, understand, and clearly communicate Medair’s core values, programmes, and organisational profile 
  • To respond to beneficiaries with compassion and confidentiality while upholding Medair’s professional reputation among the community
  • Facilitate the link between beneficiaries and Medair, providing information and feedback between beneficiaries and the Medair team as appropriate. 
  • Manage community expectations following the scope of the programme (to not make any commitments on behalf of Medair or the UN or other humanitarian agencies)
  • To uphold Medair values and to contribute to the wellbeing of the team as an active member
  • Provide translation services when necessary
  • Maintain open and frequent communication, where applicable, with all functional links for this position.
  • Be flexible, willing to assist in other areas of work as relevant and needed for this role.
  • Assist with translations from Arabic to English and vice versa as needed

QUALIFICATION / EXPERIENCE:
Vocational Qualification

ESSENTIAL:
- Degree/professional qualification

DESIRABLE:
- Related qualifications (eg. social work, development studies, communications, marketing, or related)
- Training or experience in multi-media production and editing

QUALIFICATION / EXPERIENCE:
Work Experience

ESSENTIAL:
- Experience of working with NGOs
- Experience working directly with beneficiaries from vulnerable communities
- Experience doing home visits and assessments.
- Experience working with excel databases
- Experience in report writing in English
- Experience in media, communications, advertising, marketing, or fundraising

DESIRABLE:
- Experience working with refugees or Syrian communities
- Experience working in a cash-assistance project
- Experience working with institutional donors requirements.
- Experience of using open data kit software

QUALIFICATION / EXPERIENCE:
Languages

ESSENTIAL:
- Excellent Arabic
- Very good level of English, spoken and written
