Purpose of job (global standard)
To ensure quality and effective teaching and learning of English at the Amman Teaching Centre

  • Teaching agreed contact hours for Young Learners and Adult classes across 15 working days per month.
  • To prepare and use materials effectively and provide an environment conducive to learning.
  • To assist with placement testing, interviewing and marking during registration as required.
  •  To maintain registers, records of work, student reports and other administrative documents as required.
  • To manage relationships with students, providing regular feedback and counselling on progress. To set, correct, and provide feedback on homework.
  • To assist with the development of courses, resources, teaching materials and professional development in the centre.
Context and environment
The British Council has been operating in Jordan since 1948 and is now part of the MENA (Middle East &
North Africa) region.
In Amman, the Teaching Centre has 15 classrooms, all equipped with interactive whiteboards, and a self-
access Study Support Centre. The Academic Management Team is made up of an ATCM, three Senior
Teachers (Young Learners, Adults and Business Development) and four Coordinators (Young Learners &
Adults, Corporates, Training & Development and Social Events). The centre currently employs teachers
on fixed-term mobile and locally-engaged contracts.
The Teaching Centre offers a range of courses throughout the year, the majority of which are on-site
adult General English classes taught over either four (intensive) or eight weeks (regular). On Saturdays,
there is a smaller Young Learner programme, and the centre runs a successful Young Learner summer
school in June/July/August. A significant amount of work is done offsite providing language, soft skills and
teacher training to public and private sector and not for profit organisations as part of an integrated
English offer. There is also a significant social events calendar and digital offer that teachers are
expected to contribute to.

Main duties (global standard)
  1. Plan, prepare and deliver high quality English language teaching that meets the needs of different customer groups taking into account individual learning styles
  2. Monitor progress and provide regular feedback to help manage students’ performance throughout the course, and actively promote learner autonomy
  3. Contribute to the development, evaluation, and improvement of English language courses, materials and related services, in order to meet students’ needs by actively working as a member of the teaching team
  4.  Complete teaching related administrative tasks to specified standards
  5. Actively engage in professional development and performance management to ensure quality and high standards in teaching and learning, and maintain BC’s position at the forefront of best ELT practices
  6. Contribute to the development of lasting, mutually beneficial relationships by enhancing students’ understanding of contemporary UK
  7. Support local marketing and promotional strategy, and assist the teaching centre team in delivering excellent customer service and social events
  8. Ensure safeguarding and guidelines are applied and upheld in line with standards and policy for the

Other important features or requirements of the job
The Teaching Centre is open 6 days a week with classes running from 08:30 – 20:30, although this may
be extended to 7 days. Teachers may be required to work offsite, use digital platforms and engage in the
social programme at times. Teachers will have 2 consecutive days off per week. Split shifts and
unsociable hours may be involved.
These positions are only available to Jordanian nationals with the right to live and work in Jordan.
Jordanian nationals, as per Jordanian law, will only be able to work for up-to 15 working days per
calendar month.

  • Primary YL (Age 6-10) 500+ hours
  • Secondary YL (Age 11-17) 1,000+ hours
  • Adults (General English) 1500+ hours
