Communications Coordinator


PROGRAM/DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

Mercy Corps has initiated BUILD THE CAPACITY OF LOCAL COMMUNITIES IN JORDAN TO BETTER MANAGE TENSIONS AND RESOLVE DISPUTES THAT AFFECT THEM project While maintaining the overarching goal of “Stability and social cohesion enhanced in targeted communities in Jordan” by cultivating transparent, responsive and inclusive government institutions and bridging the citizen-government divide through programming, focus on mitigating the immediate and longer-term challenges posed by COVID-19, improving social and economic youth engagement, strengthening the citizen-state relationship, addressing the increasing impact of climate change and furthering knowledge on programmatic responses to community tensions.

The program also is focusing on improving stability and social cohesion in target communities in Jordan. 

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

The Communications Coordinator will assist the team in the collection, organization and analysis of key data sets including trends in humanitarian need, population movement and partner operations. The Communications Coordinator will also work closely with team members to explore ways of improving communications and coordination across Mercy Corps partnerships. The Communications Coordinator should provide technical assistance and expertise in promoting the program's objectives, and scope of work across target communities and within the program's networks. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain consistent stock of program profile files and other printed materials for dissemination at events and presentations.
  • Assist in the creation of standard reporting templates that will improve and expand collection of key data points throughout the project.
  • Coordinate media and communications requirements from the target communities mainly information, quotes, perceptions, and feedback.
  • Manage the development of media content and publishing via media outlets (print, electronic, TV, and Radio).
  • Manage the Program's social networks mainly Facebook and Twitter in line with the monthly developed editorial calendar.
  • Provide technical assistance to the Program's team in implementing community campaigns and programs on govrnance, economic and civic engagments.
  • Coordinate revision and approval of communications materials mainly publications (print/digital).
  • Coordinate monitoring and evaluation reports on the implementation of communications activities across target communities.
  • Work with Partners to help build capacity on reporting and documentation of all aspects of their field activities.
  • Secure effective flow of information on the Program's ongoing activities and milestones within Mercy Corps and across external networks.
  • Develop a database of strategic partners on the national and community levels and include in relevant community based activities.
  • Develop and update a contact list of media representatives across targeted communities and organize media briefings and tours as required.
  • Consistently review all media outlets to identify and package relevant reports.
  • Coordinate requirements and deliverables of service providers on communications, and media productions.
  • Assist senior management researching background and contextual information related to regional program expansion.
  • Conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to Mercy Corps and to not jeopardize its humanitarian mission.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None

REPORTS DIRECTLY TO: Deputy Program Manager

WORKS DIRECTLY WITH: Civic Team Leader, Economic Team Leader, and Governance Team Leader, M&E Manager, Finance, Admin and Procurement teams.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  • University degree in journalism, digital media, communications, or social work. Masters is a plus.
  • 5 years of experience in the field of communications, Public Relations, and Media Management in the civil society sector.
  • Experience in developing content (Arabic and English).
  • Knowledge of standard principles, methods and practices of communication and information management to design and implement advertising campaigns, public events and developing communication materials is required.
  • Experience in managing social networks mainly Facebook and Twitter.
  • Very good understanding of the available media channels in Jordan in terms of its reach levels, effectiveness, and best utilization.
  • Good planning and organizational skills to prepare, update and implement communication strategy.
  • Experience in budget control and good knowledge of prices and costs of media, promotional items and other related materials.
  • Good understanding of research methodology to be able to conduct pre-testing and post-testing research to measure public awareness and public opinion.
  • Excellent understanding of the Jordanian public perceptions/culture, demographics, political situation in the region and its reflection on the public’s opinions and perceptions.
  • Ability to travel across governorates in the North and South of Jordan.

SUCCESS FACTORS:

  • Strong organizational and project management skills desirable.
  • Excellent analytical and negotiation skills desirable.
  • Some knowledge of photo editing, publishing computer software, and material production desirable.
